Transit Guide: Smart Bus
SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) has been around since 1967 but has existed in its present form since 1989. Follow the link for the history of the Metropolitan Transportation Authorities Act of 1967 (Public Act 204) and formation on SMART.
The following is one continuous page of every SMART bus route complete with maps, descriptions and links to each time table. Click on the Route Name to view the official SMART map and click on the scheduled direction to download the actual time table. Info on SMART’s Dial-A-Ride and Shuttle service can be found at the bottom of the page.
Bus riding 101
Perhaps you are a lifelong car driver and have never taken public transit in Michigan aside from the People Mover or maybe the QLine. Riding the bus is easy! Use TransitApp*, SMART’s App or Google Transit to figure out what routes to take. Walk to the nearest stop or drive & park nearby and wait. Some stops have shelters and others don’t so look ahead at the weather before you go. Some stops serve multiple routes so make sure you get on the right bus by looking at the display above the driver’s windshield. Pay as you board by inserting change, cash, inserting or swiping your pass or show the driver the DART pass on your phone and find a seat. Seats in the front are reserved for the disabled and elderly. Bus drivers will stop to pick up waiting passengers or when a stop is requested. If your stop is coming up, pull the cord along the window before your desired stop to signal to the driver you want to get off.
How much does it cost?
The basic fare is $2 for adults, $0.50 for students w/ID, $0.50 for seniors w/ID and $0.50 for people with disabilities and is good for four hours of unlimited trips and transfers. Transfers between routes & systems are free. 4-hr and 24-hr passes are available for purchase on the bus and in advance at transit centers, select retailers, online or by DART App. 7 day and 31 day regional passes are not available for purchase on the bus but can be purchased at transit centers, select retailers, online and by DART App. The fare box accepts $1, $5 or $10 bills and will dispense change via change cards which are good for future rides. If paying with the DART App, you’ll show your phone to the driver. See video below.
For any additional info, contact SMART Customer Service number at (866) 962–5515. The operators work from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Reduced fare IDs can be applied for here.
*Transit App is also useful because it includes SMART, DDOT, QLine, MoGo, Uber, Lyft and scooters, in case you miss that last bus. Download here.
